CHARITY¹

A big fat man called at the rectory², and when the door was opened, asked to see the rector's wife, a woman well-known for her charity.

"Madam," he said in a sad voice. "I wish to draw your attention to a poor family in our street. The father is dead, the mother is too ill to work and the nine children are starving³. They will be turned out⁴ into the street unless⁵ somebody pays their rent⁶ for them. It's about ten or twelve pounds." "How terrible⁷!" exclaimed the woman. "May I ask who are you?"
